Florida Public Utilities: business gas choice

FPU describes Provider Choice for qualifying business customers. Check the relevant account and program requirements before assuming you may change supply.

The short answer

FPU describes Provider Choice for qualifying business customers. Check the relevant account and program requirements before assuming you may change supply.

Start with the account, not the postcode

Identify the utility division, delivery account and current service arrangement on the bill. Ask FPU to clarify program eligibility and consult the current provider information rather than assuming all Florida accounts use the same process.

Confirm the name of the legal account holder, rate schedule, billed units and any active supply contract. A landlord-controlled meter, a new connection or a change of business ownership can require a different process from a straightforward supplier renewal.

Questions to send to the utility or prospective supplier

  1. Does this account qualify for the published supply-choice or transportation program?
  2. Which suppliers or pool managers are currently participating for this service?
  3. Who submits enrollment and how is the effective date confirmed?
  4. Which charges remain on the utility bill and which are billed by the supplier?
  5. What minimum volumes, capacity provisions, credit requirements or notice obligations apply?

Keep supply and delivery in separate columns

ResponsibilityWhat to check
Commodity supplyWho sells the gas, the price formula, included transport, fees and contract obligations.
Utility deliveryThe company maintaining local delivery and the meter; confirm tariff and emergency contacts.
Your facilityAccount authority, equipment, operating changes, safe maintenance and payment obligations.

A lower supply rate is one part of the decision. It does not remove utility delivery charges, guarantee a lower total bill or eliminate physical interruptions. Ask what can change even when the commodity component is fixed.

Review the written offer, not only the headline rate

CheckQuestion to resolve
Units and scopeAre both offers in dollars per therm, and do they include the same components?
Usage and feesWhat annual volume was assumed? Include recurring, minimum and one-time charges.
Volume toleranceWho pays if usage is above or below the forecast? What happens during closure?
Dates and renewalWhen can enrollment start? What notice method and deadline apply?
Authority and creditWho can sign, what entity owns the account, and what approvals remain?

If a charge or condition is unknown, keep it marked unresolved. A blank line is not zero. Retain the quote expiry and price definition so a later comparison uses the same evidence.

Turn the answers into an annual comparison

Use the same therm forecast and delivery period for each written offer. Convert units first if necessary. Add supplier fees and any one-time cost, keeping unchanged utility delivery and tax outside a supply-only saving. For smaller accounts, monthly supplier fees can outweigh a lower commodity rate.

Compare annual supply costs

Questions worth asking

Is this an official utility website?

No. Florida Natural Gas Advisor is an educational website from Jaken Energy and is independent of the utilities discussed. Follow the linked utility source for authoritative program information.

Can a county guide confirm my service?

No. The utility and an actual account or address-specific service check are required. A county or city guide helps organize the questions but cannot verify a meter.

What should I share first?

Your utility name, general business type, renewal timing and question. Do not send account numbers, banking information or bill attachments through the initial inquiry.
